The Queen Alexandra's Birdwing (Ornithoptera alexandrae) is a large and very scarce butterfly endemic to New Guinea. The females have been known as the largest butterfly in the world.

The size of the butterfly often caused people to collect them by shooting them with shotguns. Trade of the species is now illegal due to dropping the black market they sell up to $10,000


This endangered butterfly is found in a small forest area near Popondetta and the Oro Province.


The species inhabits ancient rainforests in New Guinea where it lives in the upper canopy. The species is considered very rare globally but it is locally common.

The larvae feed on Pipe-vines in the genus Pararistolochia.
